Recommended tools

- Isopropyl alcohol for final cleaning where suitable
- Additional electronics-grade rosin flux when required
Model railway soldering tips
- Clean the rail, rail joiner or wire until the contact surface is bright.
- Apply a small amount of electronics-grade rosin flux if required.
- Tin the clean iron tip with a small amount of solder.
- Heat the joint, then feed solder to the heated work rather than coating the iron tip.
- Remove the iron as soon as the solder flows to minimise heat transfer to nearby plastic sleepers and components.
Keep solder away from the top and inside running faces of model railway rail. On larger layouts, plan suitable expansion gaps rather than soldering every rail joint.
